In a response to mass criticism and blowback from their previous ad campaign with Colin Kaepernick, Nike has come out with a brand new campaign to empower women everywhere. Using the voiceover of the greatest female athlete of all time, Serena Williams, the ad premiered during the 2019 Academy Awards on Sunday.
The campaign, which is being called “Dream Crazier,” throws back all of the negative stereotypes professional female athletes get. Like Williams, who was called “crazy” and “emotional” last year during her tennis match, the ad also features words like dramatic and delusional. But, the message of the ad campaign is to empower these “crazy women,” to go bigger than ever before.
Williams can be heard saying:
“If we show emotion, we’re called dramatic. If we want to play against men, we’re nuts. And if we dream of equal opportunity, we’re delusional. When we stand for something, we’re unhinged. When we’re too good, there’s something wrong with us. And if we get angry, we’re hysterical, irrational, or just being crazy.”
“The use of Serena Williams as the narrator amongst a number of athletes reflects her standing as one of the most inspirational athletes of her generation who empowers girls to continue to believe in their own crazy dream,”
The ad closes out letting women know…
“If they want to call you crazy, fine. Show them what crazy can do.”
Powerful. We love it.
